Everything’s Coming Up Roses

Published by leslierich at 11:48 pm under Cards, Stampin' Up! projects

Coming Up RosesToday I’m sharing something I stamped way back in December 2005.  I hope that’s okay.  With too many irons in the fire right now I’ll be surprised if I get much stamping done this weekend but that’s just the way it goes sometimes.  Gosh, does this look dated?  It’s even scanned, not photographed.  These stamps were all quite the hot little numbers back then–All About U, Floral, Cheesecloth, Leaf Prints wheel and Everyday Flexible Phrases.  The only thing that’s retired, though, is Cheesecloth and the Leaf Prints wheel.  Now why’d they go and do that?

When I uploaded this to my Splitcoast gallery a few people thought it was a wedding card.  It’s actually a retirement card I made for my friend, Nancy Littrell.  All the roses are from the Floral background, stamped in Basic Black and colored with Stampin’ Pastels (soft chalks).  I cut them out, as you can see, and arranged them on the Cheesecloth background which was stamped on Apricot Appeal and smudged with More Mustard.  The other cardstock colors are Almost Amethyst and Close to Cocoa.  I used Timber Brown Stazon to stamp “joy” on the dangling shell button.

Now, about that U…First I stamped the Floral background in Regal Rose ink on Very Vanilla cardstock.  Then I stamped the U on the Floral background with Versamark.  I sponged Rose Red Stampin’ Pastel chalk over the Versamark U until this soft, floral U emerged.  The look is entirely different from the kissing technique because this is so much softer.  I concentrated a little more chalk around the edges for some subtle shading and then cut it out.  The idea to do this just sort of occurred to me one day and I did it a couple of times and then forgot about it.  Two years later I think I’d like to do it again.  Imagine it with a bold solid image flower like Bodacious Bouquet.

There’s a lot of work in this card but it was for a very special occasion and I sure had fun making it.  Mainly, I wanted to share the U technique because I think if you try it you’ll be pleased with the results.  Thanks for stepping back in time with me today.  Enjoy your weekend!

What a lovely card. It looks vintage to me which is a look I love. I’ve really enjoyed the All About U set - can use it lots of ways. Lucky Nancy!

This is so very beautiful and detailed! Thank you for explaining how you achieved that lovely look with the big “U”. I’m sure Nancy loved this!

Wow, totaly different style from now. For a minute I thought it was someone elses card. That being said I can see that you put a lot of work in it and it is lovely, but you definitely have grown from this card to your present day card. I’ts funny, I look back at my cards from a year ago, and it doesn’t have even half the elements that I use today. No designer paper, less fancy ribbon, no rhinestones, no scallops wow no lots of things. Now please don’t get me wrong, this is a great card, just a totaly diff. I like how you used your stamps to create all the elements you needed.

How wonderful to see this gorgeous card again. I’m especially glad you reminded us about how you did that floral U chalking technique. Such a beautiful effect, and lots of possibilities. I’m a little subdued in my appreciation of the kissing technique, but this is another story altogether! TFS. Linda

    Leslie,
Just thought I’d drop you a quick note because I was going through my retired items and I also thought the leaf prints wheel was retired. It’s on the dormant list though, so we may still see it in the new Spring catty in January. Hang onto it!! Thanks for sharing your amazing work. It’s always so inspiring!

Well Lindsey (Jacksonbelle)….I did flip, in fact I let out an audible sigh! I still get this gorgeous retirement card out to touch and look at all the gorgeous details. To think Leslie did this entire card without DP’s, but the dimensional roses and “U” are still stunning. TFS again Leslie, your friend forever, Nancy
