A Follow Up on My Last Post

Published by leslierich under Just Talk, Other Fun Stuff

I now know the source of the little stickers with the amazing prismatic sparkle that I used on the Christmas tree in my last post.  They were a gift from my friend, Linda Bullard, and she provided this information in her comment:

“As far as the identity of those fun little stickers, they are Class A’Peel Dot Sparkler Stickers (Silver), by Stampendous. I bought mine at Archiver’s, but they are supposed to be available at Michael’s too: http://www.michaels.com/art/online/displayProductPage?productNum=pc1151&channelid= Linda”

Thank you, Linda!  These stickers are well worth checking out!

Sidekick Christmas

Published by leslierich under Cards, Stampin' Up! projects

Sidekick ChristmasHere’s another one of my stamps seeing ink for the first time — one of the Sidekick Sayings, a Stampin’ Up! Level 1 hostess set.  That’s two stamps down from this set, one to go.  Gosh, surely I can use these stamps more than one time each.  One of the reasons I hang on to stamps for so long is that I tend to reach for whatever pops into my head.  An idea forms, I think about it as I go about my non-stamping business, and I eventually have time to put it down on paper.  That doesn’t necessarily involve my most recent stamp purchase.  I’m making an effort to do a little better in that regard but in many cases those uninked stamps may be several years old.  Yes, I agree — shame on me!

The images from this set are not breathtaking or even exceptionally cute.  They are quick and easy to work with, though, and I do love a funky little Christmas tree like this.  There are dress up possibilities with any stamp, no matter how simple, so that’s what I did here.  Unfortunately, most of the dressing up is not apparent in the photo because it involves sparkle and you know how hard that is to photograph without compromising other aspects of the design.  To get sparkle to show up in a photo it needs a light to shine straight onto the card front which then eliminates the shadow cast by a dimensional piece.  The only way to get the shadow is to have the brighter or closer light shining from the side.  It’s a catch-22.  With a lot of fiddling with the lights and positions, numerous photographs and trips to the computer to check the results and, needless to say, plenty of time on your hands it’s possible to show both sparkle and dimension.  It’s darn hard, though!  Well…it’s hard for an amateur like me.

This image is stamped in Basic Brown and colored with markers.  See the teeny tiny ornaments on the tree?  Those are the smallest stickers known to Man and how I got them on there is a mystery to me.  They’re amazing in real life, though.  I wish you could see them in person.  Oh, my goodness, it’s as though they’re lit from within!  Furthermore, I wish I knew what they’re called because I’d love to have more of them.  The prismatic sparkle is beyond belief for something so small and flat.  There are varying sizes on a sheet and wouldn’t you know I’d need the smallest ones for this card.  They were a gift from a friend.  As soon as I find out what they are I’ll let you know.

If you look real closely you can see a tiny glint of sparkle on the star.  That comes from the Copic Spica glitter pen.  Mine is clear but they’re available in several colors.  These pens have a quality unlike other glitter pens.  They lay down a very fine line of the most delicate fairy dust sparkle.  It catches you unawares just as you’re about to set the card aside; an effect so ethereal it’s almost mesmerizing.  But then, perhaps you know I have a fascination for sparkle these days…  I was so enchanted with the pen I wanted to touch up everything in sight — so I traced over the words, too.  That accounts for the appearance in the photo of the words being unevenly inked.  It’s actually the reflection of the Spica sparkle.

The papers, by the way, are last year’s Stampin’ Up! Christmas papers, which became this year’s Wintergreen collection — same patterns, new colors.  I like the new colors better but, darn, I’ve got almost a whole pack left from last year — surprising discipline on my part.

Well, guess I felt a little chatty today.  That’s what comes from a rejuvenating day outdoors.  I hope you had a fine day, as well.  Happy stamping to all!

Distressing News

Published by leslierich under Cards, Tutorials

Distressing NewsNothing to be concerned about…  I’ve been asked to share a little information about giving papers that tattered, distressed, torn, curled and generally worn out look so I set out to make a card I could use to illustrate that process.  I’m afraid I wound up with not a whole lot of distressing on this, though.  A little bit, but not much.  I tattered the edges of the main image panel to coordinate with the delightfully aged-in-appearance BasicGrey designer paper.

When I was making this card I found myself thinking about all the different products I was using and where they all came from.  They represent quite a few resources and several fun shopping trips:  Cardstock, inks, hardware and sentiment from Stampin’ Up!, BasicGrey Infuse designer paper from Flourishes, ribbon from Wal-Mart, Cinnamon Stickles from Eclectic Paperie, and the big and beautiful Fancy Pants From the Garden stamp set from Jacksonbelle Embellishments.  This is truly a gorgeous stamp set with lots of incredible floral images.  I’d love to sit down for a regular stamp fest with this set but all I managed on a busy Saturday was this one card.  Remember, I’m on a quest to put ink to some of the many stamps I’ve picked up on those shopping trips.  Baby steps…

As for the distressing, I use Stampin’ Up!’s distressing tool that comes with the Cutter Kit.  There are other distressing tools on the market, as well, and before I had the Cutter Kit I used my fingernail.  After I finished distressing a batch of swap cards I decided I needed a tool.  So, just in case you’ve been wondering about distressing and you’d like to save the wear and tear on your fingernail, here’s a little something I hope will be helpful.  Please excuse the goofy-sized photos.  I hope it fits okay on your screen.  Sure wish I was more of an expert at this…

The look you wind up with depends upon how you hold the tool.  In this first photo I’m holding it at an angle so only the dull side of the blade is in contact with the cardstock.  I pull the tool toward me along the edge of the cardstock, sort of lifting and rolling the cardstock as I go along.  The result, as shown in the close up, is a rolled and lightly distressed edge.

In the next photo I’m holding the tool straight on and scraping the edge of the cardstock with the sharp edge of the blade so it becomes tattered and frayed.  It’s not curled, just frayed.  You can see in the close up how different this looks from the first method.

I hope you have a totally wonderful Sunday, doing whatever it is that strikes your fancy.  I’m hoping to spend some time both outdoors and in my stamp room.  I’ll let you know how it turns out.  See you again soon!

Heartspeak

Published by leslierich under Cards, Stampin' Up! projects

HeartspeakThis is my one and only card with Stampin’ Up!’s Heartspeak set.  I don’t own the set but I received the image in an image swap with my SCS friends when I was in Portland.  This image is from Jami.  It’s really a very sweet little set and I enjoyed coloring it.  I don’t own the Copics that I colored it with, either.  It was my first experience with Copics and I was pleasantly surprised with their performance.  As with any coloring medium they require some getting used to but they weren’t as tricky as I expected them to be.  I have no idea what colors I used.  The designer papers are Stampin’ Up!’s retired Spring Showers.

I’ve just come home from dinner with girlfriends.  It was a heck of a day at work topped off with Greek food and almost too much laughter (can there be such a thing?).  I must say I’m plum tuckered out and I’m going to plop down on the couch until bedtime.  I wish you all a pleasant evening and a wonderful day tomorrow.  The weekend is almost here!  I’d jump for joy if I had the energy.  Take care!

Paper:  Creamy Caramel, So Saffron, Brocade Blue, Classic Neenah white

Ink:  Black of some kind, Chocolate Chip

Ruby Tuesday: Stella Rejoices

Angel HangingThis angel from Flourishes’ Rejoice set is another one of those stamps I’ve had for a while that I’m just now getting around to using.  I have to wonder what took me so long.  She’s beautifully drawn and was a joy to watercolor.  By the time I finished this project I felt like I’d really spent some quality time with this craft I enjoy so much.

I started out with the intent of making a card but as I worked I was suddenly overcome by the vision of it being tossed aside — thrown in the garbage or burned in the fireplace — after Christmas.  Usually I accept that once a card leaves my hands it no longer exists for me.  I experienced the joy of making it and that’s really what it’s all about.  I’ll get right on with making another card and soon I’ll have a new favorite.  When I first started stamping it was so hard to part with those cards.  Can you relate to that?  Anyway, that’s why I decided to make this into a simple wall hanging for myself.  I think it would make a nice gift, but if I were going to gift it I’d give all the cardstock pieces several coats of spray matte sealer for a nice finish.  The bone ring is attached with Alene’s Tacky glue and, trust me, it won’t come off without tearing the whole project apart. I love that stuff!

I watercolored her with ink on Shimmery White paper and then gave her a light spray of opalescent glitter — the kind that comes in a can, been around for years and is ordinarily used on 3-D craft projects.  I got mine at Wal-Mart.  It tends to leave a sort of powdery finish on the project which will brush off with a gentle touch and leave the opalescent sparkle behind.  It’s a very fine glitter and I couldn’t get it to show in the photo but it does add a very delicate sparkle to a delicate image.

The BasicGrey Stella Ruby paper in the background is stamped with that big and beautiful flourish from an upcoming Flourishes release.  I can’t wait to do more with that set!  The ivory satin ribbon is by May Arts and can be found here at Flourishes.

Thank you for stopping by today!  Have a wonderful Ruby Tuesday!

Sneaky Peek

Published by leslierich under Cards, Flourishes

Fancy ChristmasThis isn’t my usual day for posting a Flourishes card but I’m so in love with this newest, soon to be released set I can hardly stand it.  We’re supposed to be doing sneak peeks and I don’t know how sneaky this peek is but I guess I’ll just be sneaky enough not to tell you how utterly gorgeous all the rest of the elements of this set are or how many of them there are or that it will be available later this month.  Nope, you can count on me to keep the lid on it!

Let me just tell you I had an entirely different, non-Flourishes card ready to post, but I was dissatisfied with it so, rather late this evening, I hurried back to my stamp room and made this in a flash.  Now, that’s saying a lot for me because I’m a very slow stamper.  The most time consuming part of making this card was trying to choose which ornaments to hang from the curls.  I decided these icicles were the most elegant looking but, really, any of them would have looked great.

The non-sneaky part of this card (the icicles and the sentiment) are from Flourishes O Christmas Tree set.  I love how they combine but, honestly, this newest set is going to grace many a card of mine in the future.  Gee, have I mentioned before how much I love swirls and curls?

As for the creative details, I stamped the fancy flourish in SU!’s Handsome Hunter and the icicles in Encore Gold.  I embossed the icicles with very glittery Jewel Gold EP by Stampendous.  The sentiment is stamped in Real Red and I was able to emboss it since that color takes forever to dry on Whisper White for some reason.  I punched a slot to tie the ribbon through, put the pieces all together and it was done.  Very fast!

I hope you all enjoyed your weekend!  See you again soon!

Hydrangeas in November

Published by leslierich under Garden

Hydrangeas in Nov.Just a brief garden moment…  It’s been a beautiful day here on my little stretch of the Oregon coast.  There’s apples cooking down to sauce in the crock pot, the air is crisp, the neighborhood quiet.  I went out to trim the hydrangeas and found only one bush ready to cut back.  These are from two different bushes.  The reddish flower is from the same bush I pictured in September.  It started out purple, then turned the delicate shades shown in the photo below.  Now it looks like this.  When will I be able to trim it?  These hydrangeas are not giving up to Fall easily but my, oh my, they’re so pretty!

Here’s that hydrangea as it looked in September:

Hydrangea Turned

It goes through quite a metamorphosis and every stage is beautiful.  I hope you’ve been having a wonderful day, too.  I’ll be back later with a card!

Flowers in the Fall

Published by leslierich under Cards

Flowers in FallI’m at that place again where I have a multitude of uninked or underinked stamps.  We won’t even talk about the papers, ribbons and other embellishments.  I mean, I can get online and buy a stamp set just lickety split.  I did that Friday morning, in fact, before I went to work.  Impulsively.  I pined away all day at work, wishing I was home stamping, and I no sooner got home and fed the cat and started dinner cooking than I was back online because, dang, I found out Ellen Hutson has something I’ve been “needing” for ages.  Well, gee, a few other things hopped into my virtual cart while I was there, including another stamp.  After I accomplished my shopping task I peeked inside the boxes that UPS and USPS had delivered that day from SU! and Eclectic Paperie and pulled out all manner of fun items including, yes, more stamps.

Well, that does it…I’m on a quest now.  I simply must use these stamps!  All new stamps.  Oh, I may have to throw in the occasional something or other to play a supporting role.  I may have a sudden inspiration that requires the use of an old favorite.  I’ll definitely be using stamps you’ve seen elsewhere, I’m sure.  But for the most part, they’ll be new to me and now I’m all excited about it.

The stamp I used on this card is from the Fancy Pants Simply Stated set I purchased some time ago from Jacksonbelle Embellishments.  While I don’t see it available there at the moment, Lindsey may restock it at some point.  She does have some other fabulous Fancy Pants sets which I hope to show examples of in the near future.  I can’t seem to resist swirls and curls and graceful, curving lines and when you put that all together with flowers…well…my cursor goes to “buy it now” with hardly a conscious thought from me.

I stamped my flowers with ColorBox Fluid Chalk ink in Chestnut Roan and colored them with SU! markers.  I traced a simple outline around the image with my Blush Blossom marker and added Crystal Stickles for sparkle.  The designer papers are by Flair Design.  I purchased them at my local scrapbook store but I also found them here and here at Paper Addict.  The rest of the supply particulars are listed below.

Now, I’ve got some more stamping to do.  Thankfully, I do sell cards and Stampin’ Up! to help support my habit.  Looks like I’d better get busy!  Have a great weekend!
