A Valentine From a Mardi Gras Set
Do any of you remember that old margarine commercial in which the crown would suddenly appear on a person’s head when they bit into their buttered toast? I keep hearing those trumpets whenever I look at this. Now I’ll probably always associate the crowns in this Mardi Gras set with a margarine commercial.
There are four different crowns in this set and they’re all beautifully designed but, rather than making a card for Mardi Gras, I was looking for another way I could put these gorgeous crowns to use. I believe it was actually the Harlequin background that gave me this idea. It’s so much fun to play with this background, considering all the different accessory stamps Flourishes has provided for changing the look of it. By the way, this is pretty much the full size of the background. I thought I’d let you know since I was asked about it before. I computer generated my own corny sentiment so I could turn this into a Valentine card. While I was at it, I made up a few other sentiments, too, and printed them all out on the same sheet of white cardstock in several fonts and sizes so I can use them on more cards in the future.
There’s a lot of very nice detail in this crown but it was obscured somewhat when I embossed it with Jewel Gold powder on the black cardstock. The sparkle is wonderful in real life, however. I cut it out and mounted it on dimensional tape over the heart which I created by sponging ink through a stencil. I tried to soften some of the stark contrast of these colors with lots of sponging. I used Blush Blossom on the edges of the main image panel and the sentiment panel. The kingly corners of those panels were done with the corner notch punch, retired from the SU! catalog but I’m sure it’s still available somewhere.
I’m hoping this will serve as a Valentine fit for a king, even with the ribbon and rhinestones. It seems there’s a lot of bling associated with royalty, isn’t there? I sure had fun with it! Thanks so much for visiting today. Take care and be well!

LOL - I do remember that commercial, how funny! This card is really cool - and a better ‘masculine’ valentine than the things I’ve been making - I can’t help but be all pink & girlie with valentines! I think my hubby would prefer your card.
The crown looks pretty amazing in the photo - so it must be REALLY neat IRL!
Fabulous card!!! And I love that butter commercial - I still think of it when I see the crown-like car air fresheners on dash boards every now and then LOL! Hilarious!
I remember that commercial….so funny! I love your crown!! It is so nice and sparkly, and your background is fabulous! Awesome creation, Leslie!!
Great card!!!
Now I’ll be thinking of that commercial all the time!! This is a fabulous card for a guy - a wonderful sentiment without being too “girly”!
This is a terrific guy card for Valentine’s day! Great idea with the crown, and yes, I remember the commercial too. You are too funny.
What a great Valentine card. Love the background stamp and your sentiment is perfect for this card.
Wonderful card– love all of your design elements here!!! I remember that commercial well– soon as you mentioned it- ta ta ta daaah!!!! LOL!!!!
Great bg, love the font on the sentiment, perfect for the theme!
Sadly, I didn’t have to think to hard to remember….Imperial Margarine? LOL; so funny; and what a pretty card!
Gorgeous card!! I’d give it to my DH in a heartbeat! Love, love, love the colors and how you used them!
Stunning card Leslie, LOVE the colors for your design and that ribbon is beautiful. Jennnifer
Oh that’s hilarious!! Now I hear the trumpets! Then that just brought to mind the butter comercial that when you want someone to leave you serve margarine instead of butter ( we joke about that at my dads if he ever serves margarine lol). Trumpets aside though this is beautiful! A great valentine that anyone would love . TOOT, TOOT…….sorry.
this is lovely!! I really like what you did with the crown. The background looks great:)
How totally fun is this!!! What a great use of the Mardi Gras set!! I love your crown and the entire card is just so very masculine and stately!!! Great job!!!
Great card Leslie! I love all the bling and sparkle on the crown. And yes…I’m old enough to remember that margarine commercial! Too funny!

Gotta love that commercial! Instant royalty … just choose our margarine! hahaha
Your crown is divine! I love that rich & royal treatment you’ve applied! Definitely a crown fit for a king! (Yes … bling is definitely allowed for the ‘king’ card!)
Hah! I DO remember that commercial (sad, but true!) I love the crown, and the colors are really really awesome! Great card! *STAMPIN HUGS* Alex
How cute! The sentiment is perfect! Love the little red jewel on the crown!
Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane! Your cards are always an inspiration!
What a clever way to use that Mardi Gras set! I knew you would come up with something special for it. That was an Imperial Margarine commercial, which was out about the same time as the “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature!” commercial by Chiffon Margarine. They sure don’t make margarine commercials like that anymore. Linda
