True Blue Hydrangeas

Published by leslierich at 2:00 am under Garden

Hello!  I just wanted to share this photo with you:

Hydrangeas Blue Sept08

I can’t believe how blue these hydrangeas are this year!  The flowers on this bush have always been a beautiful dark purple.  The soil pH is what determines the color and I’ve done nothing different to bring about this change.  Their blue is so intense it’s almost neon.  It’s even reflected in the leaves.  Isn’t nature something?

Sooo pretty. When we started our garden 3 or 4 yrs ago I just HAD to have Hydrangeas. Although I’d rather have pink or blue I believe mine will be white. I’m sure the ph level is too low. After years of waiting for those suckers I haven’t had ONE flower on either of my two plants. We believe the bush behind them is in their way. Next summer this is going to change. I NEED Hydrangeas!

Oh, wow, Leslie, you did an incredible job with painting these beauties! What did you use? Just kidding, they are gorgeous. I’m going to print this picture and maybe try to capture this intense blue in watercolor. It would be pretty on the SU hydrangea stamp or my Me & Carrie Lou one.

Gorgeous! Mine haven’t done so well this year. I get a pinkish, purplish color most of the time. Last year I had some blue… all this on only 2 bushes!

You know you can ammend the soil yourself to try and help the colors along. Sometimes even things like mulch or pine needle droppings will change the soil ph !

Leslie, these are the most gorgeous hydrangeas I have ever seen! We put some in about 5 years ago, and they have not done well, although we thought we picked the ideal location, according to Southern Living magazine. Thanks for the picture!

I love the pictures of your beautiful garden. My photos seem to fall short most of the time, but then, I don’t have such gorgeous subjects to photograph either. Thanks for sharing yours. I would also love a short “tutorial” on how you take your pictures… type of camera, settings, any tips or tricks. This one is just gorgeous!

  31. Sheri Danielsonon 09 Sep 2008 at 2:31 pm

Those are absolutely stunning! Mine never looked anywhere near that pretty. You should send them in to a gardening magazine, Birds and Blooms perhaps. They are contest worthy

What a beautiful picture, I love hydrangeas. Mine died last summer but I am going to get some more. It is coming up to summer here in Australia, and you really have to keep the water up to them we had such harsh water rescrictions that many people lost a lot of their garden. We have just had the wettest winter I can remember for a long time and lots of the dams are getting full.
Thanks for sharing your love of Mother Nature.

  37. Shirleyoneon 09 Sep 2008 at 7:38 pm

Thanks for sharing that. I know what you mean by the Ph. I have mostly seen the pinks. This is stunning.

  38. Mary Davidsonon 09 Sep 2008 at 7:53 pm

Those are breathtaking. The photo reminds me of Grandmother’s yard when I was a kid. She always had us bring seaweed back from the beach to put around her hydrangea bed and did those blooms ever glow!! Thanks for the memories.

  39. Marinaon 09 Sep 2008 at 8:35 pm

I didn’t realize they changed color…. what a beautiful suprise!

Amazing flowers and amazing photo!!! Have the garden magazines called you yet — LOL!!! Truly wonderful!!!

  42. Linda Bullardon 10 Sep 2008 at 6:20 am

Shizzam!!! What an intense blue! Mine are all tending towards pink now, probably due to our not keeping up the Miracid fertilizing. They’re still pretty, but not nearly as stunning as yours! Thanks for sharing that wonderful photo. Linda

    GORGEOUS!!

  44. Libbyon 10 Sep 2008 at 6:09 pm

Oh my gosh, what a GORGEOUS photo!! I adore hydrangeas, especially blue ones - how I would love to have those beauties in my yard!! Do you happen to recall me being excited that my little hydrangea plant was doing well this year? Well that was short lived - turns out hydrangeas really aren’t made for 100+ heat for a zillion days in a row, not to mention our overly acidic (or is it basic, I forget!) soil. (this is why I’m no good at gardening, I can’t even remember which soil it is! but I was talking to my friend, a landscape architect, and he told me they are not meant for our soil. why oh why do they sell things here if you can’t grow them here? it’s just WRONG). :-)

  45. bronihon 11 Sep 2008 at 12:56 pm

Your hydrangeas are breathtakingly beautiful! I’ve missed having mine bloom. They tried early in the spring but have since withered to nothing in the drought. I just try not to go out into my garden any more. It’s too depressing. But thanks for lifting my spirits with your gorgeous garden!

  46. Shel9999on 11 Sep 2008 at 4:52 pm

WOW! Talk about breathtaking!! What a LOVELY photo!
