Pansies on Yellow

Published by leslierich at 1:59 am under Cards, Kitchen Sink Stamps

KSS Pansies Jan09I have a co-worker who occasionally asks me to make cards for his mother to use…”Something Mom would like.”  Well, let’s see…what would Mom like?  I’m sure he’s thinking along the lines of prim & proper, or maybe I just think that’s what he’s thinking.  After all, his mom is not much older than me.  I tend to forget that fact since, though I’ve met her, I’m more closely associated with her son.  I also tend to forget my own age (sometimes literally), and the person inside me is startled by the image confronted in the mirror.  I realize, outwardly, I look and act older than I did when I was 25 and, let’s face it, I feel older, too, but there’s still, at the core, the same person I’ve always been.  I’m not older, I’m just more “developed”.

So, I wonder, does an “older” person necessarily want “older” cards?  I think we just like what we like and age has nothing to do with it, other than the usual fluctuations in trends and preferences.  Who are these “older” people, anyway?  Surely not me!  Besides, it’s a relative term — older than what?

However, there is a certain stereotype and I was thinking along those lines when I made this card, not only for my co-worker’s Mom, but also for Sharon’s challenge — to make a card for an older woman.  I tried to travel the middle road without going too far over the hill.  I used pearls, ribbon, soft colors, and words that seemed fitting.  I threw in some polka dots to freshen it up — it’s not like they were invented yesterday…  The pansies are an old, familiar flower.  Gee, I like all these things, too.  But then, I like a lot of things…

The KSS Pansies were done in four steps:  1) Barely Banana, 2) Lavender Lace, 3) Lovely Lilac, 4) Basic Black.  Those little specks you see are touches of glitter that don’t show fully in the photo.  I sponged around the image with Celery ink.  SU!’s retired Cheesecloth background was stamped in white pigment ink on the Barely Banana card base.  The words are from the KSS 3-Step Daisy set.

I’ve got to run now, but I sure enjoyed our visit and this fun challenge.  Have a wonderful day!

What a beautiful card! I’m sure an “older” person will love it - as well as everyone else! I’m with you about forgetting my age. I was commenting on Sharon’s blog about being the same age as her, but I did have to stop and think about it for little bit :) Thanks for a great blog, btw.

Beautiful card. I love pansies. And I like how you punched the edge to hold the ribbon in place.

Older? Not I said the little red hen. Not I said the dog. Not I said the duck. And certainly not I said Gabriela!

Lovely! And I agree, older is a relative term and I am younger than some of my relatives!

I just “laughed out loud” when I read what you said about your feelings on age…that was funny, because it is so very true…I feel exactly how you do about my age. The card is just lovely, for young or old :)

Oh my gosh, this is fabulous Leslie, you are amazing with the KSS stamps! This is incredibly beautiful and so realistic! I love the soft outer edges of the panies, just fabulous! I like the niches you punched for the ribbon, and the gold pearls are the perfect accent.

Leslie this is gorgeous! Those pansies just pop off the page. I agree about the “more developed” theory. I feel 25, and sometimes when I’m speaking to someone that age it occurs to me that altough I’m talking like I’m 25…they “see” an older lady. I think we like what we like and that’s often reflected in the trends…so what is old to us might have been the current trend when they were 25. However you look at it, your card is gorgeous. I love the little “grooves” for your ribbon!

so lovely, your coloring is so amazing! I had to laugh, I too feel the same way, I know I am getting older but still feel like that young girl inside. Love the fresh look to this, and it would be perfect for any age woman!

Beautiful card! I am 69 and would have liked it at age 39! I think all women like flowers and pearls-tfs.

  17. Lenoriaon 16 Jan 2009 at 8:05 am

I love the card and I think it is “timeless” and age doesn’t matter in this case, it is just a classy, beautiful card!

  18. Nancy C.on 16 Jan 2009 at 8:36 am

Well, you know my feelings on pansies - and this card speaks to their beauty! As far as I’m concerned, it’s not how old you are but how one feels inside! Definitely - stop and smell the pansies on the way!

    Beautiful Leslie, love the dots!!

  20. wendyon 16 Jan 2009 at 9:03 am

wow this is beautiful Leslie xx

  21. Martie Mon 16 Jan 2009 at 9:23 am

Well I am OLD - even though I don’t feel it (thank God) but I’m too the point where you can no longer deny what you see in the mirror. But my point in writing - I love this card but I would love it if I was 21, 31, 41 whatever.

PS: In an effect to get used to dealing with my age - it’s 69 - soon to be 70 OMG how did this happen!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Jessicaon 16 Jan 2009 at 9:35 am

This is gorgeous, Leslie! You are so good with these KS stamps.

I love this card, Leslie!! Your card is so fabulously colored and simply elegant! I’ve always thought pansies were pretty (love their little faces), have always loved pearls, lace and gentle colors. Though the only thing I might wear these days are the pearls - when the opportunity arises:)

Hi Leslie, Love the card, beautiful colours. I am a trifle older than you and I must say the only colours that grate are the bold brights. I have a friend the same age and the only cards she makes are bold brights (because they are happy colours) and she has to force herself to use soft subtles. Thats why the card shops have so many cards because we are all so different and want different things no matter what age.
    Love the pansies.

Beautiful card Leslie! Got a good chuckle on you age dialogue! This “old broad” loves anything that makes me laugh out loud! You gotta laugh to stay sane!

  27. Viv (VivLyn)on 16 Jan 2009 at 4:00 pm

That’s funny because I will make what I think is an older card for my MIL, while I’m 60 and would be hurt if I got an old lady card!! Heck, I am old but don’t feel it most of the time. It depends on the weather. LOL I like this pansy card and it does look like an older person card. There are some flowers that just seem to be ones that you think of as older…roses, pansies, gladiolas, etc. Great card!

  28. nancy littrellon 16 Jan 2009 at 5:11 pm

So sweet and pretty. Love your spring colors and pansies, which are perfect for any age. Your crisp and clean design will brighten up anyones day. TFS

  29. Rose Annon 17 Jan 2009 at 9:58 am

Your pansies are colored to perfection, and I love the soft colors and different background stamps you’ve used!! I also love the sparkle and pearls!! Beautiful card, Leslie!!

  30. Elenaon 17 Jan 2009 at 6:30 pm

This card is so beautiful and elegant! I love the gentle volors of the papers!
I think Leslie that we all feel younger that our age is… I don’t know… I am 30, but I still think that I am 17, just finished high school… But when I look at the mirrow I realise I am not 17. It makes me feel sad, but than I remember the one saying: Age is what you feel!
Your co-worker’s mom will love this card!

  31. Shel9999on 19 Jan 2009 at 6:06 pm

How pretty! Your coloring is always over-the-top fabulous, Leslie!

  32. Linda Bandowon 21 Jan 2009 at 4:03 pm

Leslie the card is pretty but like you I think that it’s the attitude not the age….I too look in a mirror and wonder who that old person is, because I feel the same except for the usual aches and pains. His Mom probably would also like something funny or trendy.

  33. Susan (rainy)on 23 Jan 2009 at 3:34 am

One can NEVER go wrong with purple pansies!! Gorgeous coloring as always, Leslie. This card is breath-taking…. and perfect for any age!

  37. Linda Bullardon 24 Feb 2009 at 8:07 pm

Oh boy, more pretty Kitchen Sink pansies! I love the shading around them, and the soothing combo of Banana and Celery. I also enjoyed your conversation about being older on the outside but not the inside. I can certainly relate. Linda
